WE DON'T JUST TRANSFORM WOMEN'S HAIR LOSS WE CHANGE LIVES PAULA'S LUPUS HAIR LOSS STORY

Paula’s hair loss story began 12 years ago, when she noticed thinning to the top of her head. However, one particular experience at a children’s birthday party brought the issue into sharp focus.

“I was at a children’s party and I was supervising on the bouncy castle. Somebody had taken a photo which showed the back of my head, and you could clearly see my scalp. I was distraught.”

As time went on, hair loss began to impact every part of Paula’s life.

“I was losing all my confidence. I didn’t go out or anything, I didn’t go to any do’s, I didn’t go to any weddings, I didn’t like going on holiday because if I went in the pool and my hair got wet you could see it more. It was becoming a massive issue.”

Paula went to see her GP, but sadly they weren’t able to give her any definitive answers. Determined to get to the bottom of the issue, Paula made an appointment with a specialist. Blood tests revealed that Paula was living with Lupus – a long-term condition that causes joint pain, skin rashes and tiredness. What Paula also discovered is that hair loss is a common side-effect of Lupus, especially in women.

 “They said my hair wouldn’t grow back because my follicles are permanently damaged. And when I was told that I thought ‘oh my god, what am I going to do? I didn’t want a wig. I wanted my hair back.”

Paula’s closest friends could see how much the issue was affecting her and they wanted to help.

“My friends wanted to club together to get me a really expensive wig. But I told them that I didn’t want a wig, mainly because I didn’t want my husband to see me waking up with no hair.”

Paula’s mum could also see the how low her daughter had become as a result of hair loss, so she searched for ‘female hair loss’ on the internet and came across Hair Solved.

“I got quite depressed and low about it and I cried a lot to my Mum, who is sadly no longer with us. She could see how depressed I was getting about my hair, so she found Hair Solved for me. She said ‘let’s go here and see what they can do’.”

That was four years ago now and, for Paula, hair loss feels like a thing of the past. 

“I don’t feel like I’ve got hair loss any longer because my system has become a permanent fixture and it’s an everyday thing. This is my hair now and I love it. It has been life changing.”

Paula loves the flexibility she has in being able to style her hair for different occasions or if she just feels like a change.

“I can have it in plaits, I can have it up in bunches, I can curl it… I can do anything with it.”

Over the years, Paula has also enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere at her local Hair Solved salon.

“The girls at Hair Solved are just the best. They are sort of like your ‘hair’ best friends. People are sat at the side of you with the same issues. We have a good laugh and everybody chats – I have always loved going.”
